How to pronounce Franchot's name

Some people have asked how to pronounce Franchot's name and even my film historian hero Robert Osborne incorrectly pronounces it before he introduces Franchot's films on TCM. To set the record straight, I uploaded a quick 4 second soundclip of Franchot introducing himself before a radio performance of "Remember the Day" with Loretta Young for the Screen Guild Theater. If the embedded clip doesn't play for you, here's the link: https://youtu.be/ExTwfxumidE

  1. So he says FRAN-SHOW TONE. Still...a pretty unusual name. But then again his full name was Stanislaus Pascal Franchot Tone. Franchot sounds like he should be from France or some other European country, not the US. I had never heard of him until I started watching the TCM (Tuner Classic Movies)channel. He's a very handsome and talented actor. ( I watched Mutiny on the Bounty yesterday) I was lead to believe that he was one of those old Movie Stars whose life ended in squalor and misery due to drugs and/or alcohol. Now I read that although he did have a habit of falling for (and marrying) someone to quickly or someone that he would just drag him down...he did have quite a full life and kept acting until his death - in 1968. His Great Grandfather's surname was FRANCHOT. (Richard Hansen Franchot was a U.S. Representative from New York and then an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War)

    1. I hear CHO rather than SHOW in the second syllable. Last name is just as you’d expect.

  2. There is a podcast about Barbara Peyton on the Famous Fates podcast and the announcers continually refer to him as "Fran-shot." Does anyone have any familiarity with French pronunciations?
